Through references ranging from ancient Greece to the AIDS crisis, including psychoanalysis, prison cultures, contemporary sexual subcultures, and gender imaginaries, Javier Sáez and Sejo Carrascosa analyze how the anal has contributed to organizing discourses on masculinity, femininity, heterosexuality, and homosexuality.

The book also examines the relationship between anal sexuality and power structures shaped by social class, race, and heterosexism, dismantling the traditional identification between anal penetration and homosexuality.
