An autobiographical journey toward finding intersex role models to start a revolution. The stories of its protagonists show us the construction of a collective identity in the search for a present/future of freedom and rights.
Castellón, 2016. Lola is born. The lead actress. She takes the stage. And little by little, she breaks her silence. She travels, searching for role models. The first hermaphrodite on horseback is there, waiting in Barcelona. On the shores of the Mediterranean, another appears: la Melero. A sudden call takes her to Galicia, alongside the COI hurdler. Anxious, she emigrates. Settled in Valencia, she unexpectedly meets a girl from Cabanyal. She lives her catharses. In Logroño, she dances alongside another of the tomboys. She loses her way. She discovers an intersex compass located in a spot in Mexico. Next destination: Basque Country. At the desk next to hers sits the Kollontai of the 21st century. From Madrid, the voice of a proper and classy lady bursts in strongly. Meanwhile, an extrabinary phoenix bird crosses the gray sky of Bizkaia. And then, she puts a face to the hologram of the documentary No box for me. What’s missing? Discovering a character from the southern district of Seville. Returning home. Talking with the two who were missing. Stopping. In Salamanca, she writes and performs. Lola empowers herself and Mer de-genders. Finally, she has found an intersex family. Mer Gómez (@mercurito). «Rare creature. I write from the crossroads, I am a hyena.» Intersex activist and writer. Graduate in Journalism. PhD in Feminist and Gender Studies from the University of the Basque Country. Author of La rebelión de las hienas and Las hermafroditas del s. XXI. She has written and starred in the monologues for microtheater La revolución de Lola and Solo apto para BICHAS RARAS, as well as the short documentary Se receta silencio. She collaborates with the magazine Pikara Magazine. Since 2020, she coordinates the intersex collective i together with Laura Vila Kremer. Currently, as a communicator, she conducts workshops and training on intersexualities and body diversity. Her goal is to center the life experiences of intersex people to generate new cultural imaginaries about intersexuality.
